Today’s song of the day is “Colors” from Yo Gotti featuring Gucci Mane and Juelz Santana.

The track is pretty much what you would expect from the trio of trappers.  Hard hitting beat, hard white subject matter.

Make sure to check in soon for the November wrap-up.

It’s been awhile since the last song of the day.  This one will make up for it though.  Today’s track is “Stoner’s Night Pt. 2” by Juicy J and featuring Wiz Khalifa.

Juicy J and Wiz get together again over this soulful beat.  Like another one of Juicy J’s recent tracks, this one uses a sample from Wiz as the hook.  Juicy J brings his characteristic choppy flow and Wiz stays laid back as ever.

As Juicy J says, “Roll that Cali green in a Zig Zag paper,” relax, and enjoy this one until Juicy J’s Blue Dream and Lean comes out later today and Wiz and Snoop Dogg’s collaboration Mac and Devin Go to High School drops on December 13th.

Stay Trippy Mane.

Black (Cement) Friday

Black Friday kicked off the holiday shopping season in a big way.  Malls opened early, crowds arrived earlier, and lines snaked away in every direction.  At the top of the list for many hip hop and sneaker heads was the Black Cement Jordan IIIs.

This must have pair has been seen on the feet of hip hop superstars like Kanye West, Big Sean, and J. Cole over the last few months.  The exclusive release combined with the already hectic Black Friday mobs to create quite the event for shoe shoppers.

This is just the beginning of the Christmas shopping season, and Jordan fans have the much-anticipated “Last Shot” XIVs and “Concord” XIs to look forward to before the end of the year.

Did you get yours?

Frannie Kelley: I think lyrics are the best way into rap for people who want to give it serious consideration and didn’t listen a lot when they were young and impressionable.

Great points on the artistic value of hip-hop music.

“Ain’t No Way Around It” was actually released yesterday, but there wasn’t anything better that came out today.  The track features Future on the hook and first verse with contributions from Big Boi and Young Jeezy.  Mike Will chips in with a minimalist beat that still manages to hit hard.

Song of the day is “I’m on Fire” from Ludacris’s new mixtape 1.21 Gigawatts (Back to the First Time).  The track features Big K.R.I.T. and production from Mike Will.  Mike Will’s beat takes a page out of the featured K.R.I.T.’s book and is a laid back combination of soulful vocal and guitar samples.  Ludacris and K.R.I.T. both go in and compliment each other well.

Mixtape Cover

It’s been awhile since we’ve heard some fresh music from Scott “Kid” Mescudi.  We finally get a chance to listen to some new tracks with the release of the Rap Hard mixtape.  While the material isn’t really “new” (it was recorded between 2000-2001), that shouldn’t really be a disappointment to any of Kid Cudi’s fans.  Bottom line is … we get to listen to some never-before-heard tracks.

Top track:

1. “I’m Not the Average” - The horn sample in the beat goes great with the energetic delivery and catchy hook.  Production sounds like something you might find on Wiz Khalifa’s old Prince of the City tapes.

Rap Hard has a pretty raw sound overall.  Considering the tracks are from nearly a decade prior to A Kid Named Cudi, this is not suprising.  Cudi’s flows are very reminiscent of that tape, but there seems to be something missing.  The tape livesup to its name and also takes listeners back to Cudi’s earlier material, which is a welcome site to fans who may be disappointed in the new rock-focused direction he is headed in.

Overall Rating : 3/5
